At the end of class, students got the article, From These Beginnings. The questions are due on Friday. Tomorrow we take a look at our first DBQ! So much fun ahead. :)
The bulk of class today was spent discussing 9/11. After hearing my story of the day, students then watched clips of the news coverage from that morning in order to get a feel for the experience of the event. Afterwards, students shared stories of the discussions they had with family members about their experiences of the day. A special shout out to 4th/5th period for their willingness to share these stories. Even though I've been doing a variation of this lesson for the past 16 years, today gave me a different and fascinating perspective to hear what parents felt on that day as they had just brought a child into this world, had one on the way, or even just found out that day that their child was conceived (my mind was blown by those stories especially).

Today's class started with a comparison of Juan Gines de Sepulveda's and Bartolome de Las Casa's views on Native Americans. Students were then introduced to Short Answer Questions (SAQ) and we practiced with an example.
I'll get those summer assignments returned on Monday so we can then finishing reviewing the work you did. Next week we will get into new material and the workload will start to increase. Over the weekend, it would be a good idea to review of Chapters 2 and 3. Students started today by writing a Type 1 on why they chose to take AP U.S. History. When then discussed why the years 1491 and 1607 were used as the years for Period 1. We then had a quick Type 2 reading quiz over reading from the summer assignment. Lastly, we took a look at the types of historical thinking skills students will be working on throughout the year.
Tomorrow we will continue to work on the skill of comparison as we take a look at two different views on Native Americans from a Spanish perspective. Welcome to the new school year! This part of the site will be used to summarize what we did in class (especially useful if you're absent) and also to communicate homework (usually reading).
Yesterday in class we took care of the basic first day activities (seating chart, syllabus, and expectations). Today, students will take the Pre-Assessment. Afterwards, students have time to review their reading from the summer, our first reading quiz scheduled for Thursday. I look forward to a great year, let's go to work. |
