The first part of class today was spent on a class debate regarding the effectiveness of late 19th century municipal governments.

We then did a practice Short Answer Question.  Remember that the chapter needs to be finished by Monday.

**Students were informed today about the opportunity to earn extra credit at office hours.  If students come and complete work relevant to areas where they need growth, and can produce evidence of that work, they will receive 5 points of extra credit each time.  Roughly 30 points will be available the remainder of the second trimester.

Synthesis Activity

2/7/2017

Today's class focused on an activity in which we went into depth on the process of synthesis.  We first did a close reading of the 14th Amendment centered around discussion questions.  We then watched a brief video of the historian Eric Foner discussing the significance of the 14th Amendment.  This was followed by a reading that finished with an example of a historian using synthesis.

The next part of this activity involved drawing comparisons between the Plessy v. Ferguson and Korematsu v U.S. Supreme Court cases.

For homework tonight you need to fill out the Plessy box next to "Equal Protection and Due Process." Consider the following:
  1. How did the ruling of the case violate Plessy's right to Equal Protection of the law and Due Process?
  2. How did the Supreme Court (as evidenced by the Majority Decision (provided in the packet) defend their ruling that "separate but equal" did not violate the 14th Amendment?
I've included what's needed for the homework below.
