Today in class students got into groups and did an activity addressing the major issues for tomorrow's reading. I've included a copy below. Remember that by tomorrow, you need to be through page 88.
Today, we started with a Type 2 reading quiz over Chapter 4 and discussed some of the important content. Afterwards, we worked on an activity in which students analyze audience/purpose for three different letters of the time period.
Reading Homework by Thursday is 77-88. Today in class we went first went over the test. Remember, after everyone has taken the test, you are welcome to sign a test out if you want to look over it more at home. If anyone wants to talk about study habits or test preparation, Tuesday and Thursday after school next week works for me. After the test, we went over the process of Contextualization, students then wrote and turned in a practice contextualization based on the New England/Chesapeake DBQ. I've included the PowerPoint with clarification on contextualization from the College Board below. For Monday, you need to have Chapter 4 read. However, since you will have an article on the issue next week, you do not need to read the two blue pages on the slave trade. Have a great weekend.
Today's class focused on reading and discussing the concept of mercantilism. Specifically, we looked at the Navigation Act of 1660 as an example of English attempts at economic regulation of the colonies. It is important to remember though that this attempt at regulation was not heavily enforced, which gave rise to the idea of salutary neglect. I've included the review guide below if you want to get started with your preparations for Thursday's test. For homework, continue your reading of Chapter 3 and take notes on the colonial settlements in Pennsylvania, New York and the Middle Colonies. Be sure to consider in your notes who settled the area, the economic activity, and what challenges they may have faced. I'll walk around class tomorrow to check to see if this work is done.
Class time was spent today working on document analysis from the 1993 DBQ. We will continue this activity tomorrow. Remember that Chapter 2 needs to be finished by tomorrow.
Roughly the first half of class today was spent finishing student presentations on their assigned section of the chapter. As we left Period 1 (1491-1907), we generated a list of important terms from the section that we'll want to keep on eye on down the road. We finished class with a lecture on the differences between the New England and Chesapeake settlements. This will help set us up for the document work that will be done tomorrow. I've included the PowerPoint below. Don't forget that you need to have Chapter 2 finished by Thursday.
Today in class we began by discussion the reasons why the College Board picked the year 1491 for the beginning of Period 1 ( 1491-1607). This introduced the concept of periodization and how it relates to the historical thinking skills we'll be working on this year. We next had our first reading quiz and finished by talking about Point of View (POV) and how it relates to interpretation of primary sources. We'll continue with this tomorrow.
By Monday, Chapter 1 needs to be finished. Students took the trimester pre-assessment today. The remaining time was used to start on tonight's reading homework (pages 4-11). The first reading quiz will be tomorrow.
Welcome to the new school year! This part of the site will be used to summarize what we did in class (especially useful if you're absent) and also to communicate homework (usually reading).
Today in class we took care of the basic first day activities (seating chart, syllabus, and expectations). Tomorrow, students will take the Pre-Assessment and be assigned textbooks. There is no homework tonight, rest up and work on getting back on a school schedule. There will be reading homework tomorrow night with our first reading quiz scheduled for Thursday. I look forward to a great year, let's go to work. |
