Periodization (Turning Point) Work

3/29/2016

Today's class focused on the type of work that needs to be done in order to effectively analyze turning points in history through the Periodization Long Essay format.

We started by working on an outline of the time period 1850-1950.  You must make sure you have a basic understanding of chronology (when stuff happened).  This is vital in order to be able to make connections across different historical events.  This is the type of work you will be expected to do on the AP exam.  Hopefully, today's activity was helpful.  I've included a picture of the board as it looked at the end of class today.

The reading for tonight is 797-803.

3/28/2016

Today's class started with a Type 2 over Chapter 33.  We then discussed the important developments of the chapter.  They included the following:
  • The Good Neighbor Policy (a dramatic departure from the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine)
  • 1930s Isolationism (as illustrated by a series of Neutrality Acts)
  • The importance of the Lend-Lease Act
  • The significance of the ship the St. Louis

We next viewed a series of political cartoons by Dr. Seuss that illustrate American concerns leading up to and immediately following the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  The PowerPoint is included below.

We finished by watching the FDR installment of the President's series which gives an overview of the Great Depression and World War II.

If you're looking to study for the Period 7 test on Thursday, remember that this period includes the following:
  • Imperialism
  • Progressivism
  • World War I
  • 1920s
  • Great Depression/New Deal
  • World War II
The reading homework for tonight is 789-797

Type 2, Docs With a Twist, Essay Possibilities

3/24/2016

Today's class started with a Type 2, when then discussed the end of the chapter.  Specifically, our focus was on the rise of organized labor (emboldened by the Wagner Act) as evidenced by the sit-down strike in Flint, the court-packing attempt by FDR, and the criticisms of the New Deal.

After that, we did an activity where students analyzed documents on the New Deal with rotating partners.  It likely was the best moment of student's lives.

We then finished by talking about possibilities for tomorrow's Long Essay.  Included were the following:
  • Progressivism
  • World War I (foreign policy/impact on the home front)
  • 1920s (modern culture & backlash, pro-business Republican policies)

Remember when you study tonight to "study big."  By that I mean that you should not simply concern yourself with memorizing details.  While including evidence in your analysis will be important tomorrow, you also need to think about things like the major turning points during this time period.  How did the different events impact each other?  How did things change?  For whom?  How did they stay the same?

There are no pages assigned for tonight, use your APUSH time to get ready for the essay tomorrow.  But Chapter 33 needs to be finished by Monday.

One week until spring break!

Trimester 3 Overview/Type 2/1920s Notes

3/14/2016

Today in class we looked over the exam from last trimester, students learned their grades, had a quick Type 2 writing on the weekend reading, and started 1920s notes (which we will finish tomorrow).

Reading for tonight is 703-708,

**New Procedural Change**

From now on, when I'm putting assignments and tests into eSchool, if I don't have anything from you because you were gone, I will put in a ''Z'  for a grade, even if you are out sick.  The reason I'm doing this is to encourage students to make up assignments/tests in a timely manner.  You obviously are not penalized at all when you make up work from when you are sick.  What I noticed last trimester is that when I leave the grade blank (which does not impact your overall grade), some students do not end up making up work from when they were gone.  So while I realize that a 'Z' might have a startling impact on your grade, it is only temporary and I will be sure to grade make up work the day it is turned in/made up.
