Political Conflict: Then and Now

9/30/2013

Today we finished our charts that detailed the political struggle between the colonial assemblies and the royal governors.   Students had time to get in their groups and we then discussed the conflict between these two groups.

In both classes, the impending government shut down was the dominant issue during current events.  Here's  a link for those that want more information.

This next link details the economic impact of a government shutdown:

Chapter 3 Test

9/25/2013

Class today was consumed by the Chapter 3 test.  After the test, students picked up the Chapter 4 packet and the next article.  You are to have the article read by Friday, but remember you do not have to do the article questions.  Instead, we'll have a quick Type 2 assessment over the article and we will then discuss its contents.

I've updated the calendar to reflect important dates for Chapter 4.  This is the last of the colonial chapters.  I'm sure people are ready to get to the actual beginning of the United States (I know I am).  But hopefully you are getting a solid colonial foundation that will help you understand later time periods.  See you tomorrow.

Chapter 3 Discussion Questions

9/23/2013

Today in class we went through a series of discussion questions relevant to Chapter 3.  They are as follows:

•What was the role of family in New England? •What was the status of women in New England society? (gains/limitations) •Was there social mobility in New England? •What was the impact of mortality on the Chesapeake? •What was the impact of social stratification on the Chesapeake?

For each question, students had a few minutes to discuss in groups and we then discussed them as a class.  After the discussion questions, I went through to check that students had completed their homework on the colonial uprisings that took place during the 17th century.

With the remaining class time, students were able to work on their learning objectives, which are due on Tuesday.

9/11 on 9/12

It became clear during 1st period that many students were disappointed that their day yesterday did not include any mention of 9/11.  Given that I was gone, and your social studies course is the most likely venue for these discussions, we spent a significant portion of today talking about the events of September 11, 2001.  It's always interesting how those stories have changed over the years as we now enter a time period in which most students are too young to remember.

First period also had SSR, 5th period had an opportunity to share the thesis their group wrote on the 1993 DBQ.  Tomorrow we'll discuss the article, see you then.

Work Day/First Grades in Pinnacle

9/11/2013

My son was sick today so I had to stay home.  My views on days where I'm gone is that the best use of time is for you to have the opportunity to work on assignments for the class.  Between the article, chapter readings and studying for next Tuesday's test, you should have had plenty to do.

I put the first Type 2 in Pinnacle today, from here on we should have a steady flow of points into your grade.  It is important to start as strong as possible.  Next week the pace is going to pick up quite a bit.

I'll be back tomorrow, hopefully it wasn't too hot in the room today.
